Where to start with Chyna! My heart, my soul. I used to get obsessed with watching WWF at my nan & pops who had Austar in Ouyen. Growing up in Mildura we had 4 channels so it was crazy flicking thru 99 technicoloured worlds. I always came back to the wrestling. Its campiness, homo-eroticism & theatre enamoured me. Chyna was a fucking beast & I was totally mesmerised by her. I don't keep up with current wrestling but the attitude-era surely was something else! One of my favourite photos in the family photo album is of me in a pink tutu, running out of my Jurassic Park tent getting smashed around with wrestling moves served from my Uncle Mark. A beautiful duplicity I could see in all facets of wrestling & in Joanie.

Love love body horror films and yeah I'm gonna chuck TOTAL RECALL (1990) in there. This scene blew my mind when I first saw it. I thought it was hilarious how serious they tried to keep it. Got the two panel layout showing in disguise and out.

This character came to life after some ketamine scrawlings on a spew bag on a flight home from Naarm. I desired deeply to be free from trauma and find ease in life. This felt like a poem of sorts to who I wanted to be. Zooming thru life surrounded by beauty & nature, filled to the brim with self-confidence & self-love. The butterflies would become a symbol I tattooed on my arm to carry me through a tumultuous time when I had my top surgery. I wore my screen-printed pants, the scriggly butterflies my only company in hospital. The sleeve print read:
"Quite often we go thru life with our brains all the way back there but I found this new space where I can fly thru life without a worry in my mind."

CRYO SENTENCE

This piece is based on the beef-cake action film Demolition Man (1993)! When I was a kid my mum would religiously state that she'd rather me watch a love scene than an action movie with killing. DEMOLITION MAN soon became one of my most rebellious VHS tapes that I'd watch back to back with Fantasia, a recording of Lulu & my copious RAGE compilations full of fav music clips. I was (still am) so deviously attracted to Wesley Snipes who played the bad guy in the movie. He wore acid wash overalls, an orange muscle tee & had bleached hair with the most gorgeous piercing eyes. For this design I took photos with my phone of anything that depicted 'modern technology' within the film. I'm so fascinated with how movies project ideas of technical evolution (this one being made in 1993 but based in 2032) & the stylizing within DM is so beautiful. Something felt really crunchy about taking a photo of a screen then sending it to Photoshop for more crunching (throwing it thru threshold) then printing it onto a tee. It felt like folding up the image within itself to take it to a new, unrefined, analogue world. Its crisp digital cousin a distant memory.

This design was a culmination of old sex worker ads out the back of 90's Australian tattoo mags. I had been gifted a stack from a friend and after discovering the beautiful back page adverts I slapped together a design. Taking photos of any ads that stood out to me then blasting them thru edits within an inch of their life on photoshop I mamaged to collage some chaos together. A lot of very dated time stamps representative of the era. My fav is the gay men, Johno & Steve... mm sexy.

This design was an amalgymation of my obsession at the time beingm Buffy The Vampire Slayer & SUPER INFRAMAN, a Shaw Brothers film from 1975. The Hell Mouth is where the vampire activity is most rampant in Sunnydale High & the back of the shirt has a quote from SUPER INFRAMAN that reads:
"Condition their minds. Increase reception. Eradicate resistance."

The Land of Pleasure series was a red hot beginning to SICKNASTY. Featuring a friend, WILK, from Naarm who is a strong, beautiful & delicious advocate for the deaf community. After designing a sexy poster for their lover at the time they saw potential in a tee design. The shirt spread a message of sexual liberation & confidence in self.
"A land of gentle love and turbo babes - fluid in nature and in movement - we welcome you to the land of pleasure - feel the golden light ripple inside of you until your bones tickle - no judgement, just good times"

SICKNASTY ORIGINAL TEE

This was the first release of SICKNASTY. After 10 years of hospitality work, I was nervous to embark on the sole-trader path. I created & printed this shirt to take the system for a spin. Before I launched I gifted this shirt to friends & creatives to share the news of the new journey. The claw on the chain symbolises breaking free from the constraints of mental illness & its deabilitation. Taking steps to self sufficiency, while rocky at the best of times, was a love letter & belief to self. It felt right for the first design to symbolise stepping out of the clutches of dominating forces & normative systems.
